current genetic & phenotypic testing
| |
The following is a list of the currently publicized genetic and phenotypic tests available for the dachshund breed. Information and prices in U.S. dollars are accurate as of 07.03.15. Some discounts may be available; check with the individual companies. Discussion about these tests can be found here.

normal traits — genetic testing
|
· parentage - DDC Veterinary - $38 recommended company
· parentage - HealthGene - $45
· parentage - MMI Genomics - $55
· parentage - vetGen - $60
· heritage breed - MMI Genomics - $65
· relationship - MMI Genomics - $?
· blood type - PennGen - $20
· longhair coat type - DDC Veterinary - $58 for 1-4 dogs, $48 for 5+ dogs recommended company
This test, as of 07.03.15, is available through the nice folks at DDC Veterinary. Done using swabs. If you need to find out if your wirehairs or shorthairs carry longhair, this the test for you.
· coat furnishings, coat curl (NEW) - DDC Veterinary - $58 for 1-4 dogs, $48 for 5+ dogs recommended company
These two tests are now available and can be useful if breeding wirehairs or longhairs.
· 2 colors, 1 dilution, & 2 patterns - DDC Veterinary - $58 for 1 locus, $20 for each additional locus recommended company
DDC Veterinary can determine the following alleles: A, a, Bc, bc, Bd, bd, Bs, bs, D, d, E, e, [E/e]m, K/br, k. Done using swabs. If you have tested with them in the past and your dog either is or carries for chocolate, you may want to re-contact them to distinguish which chocolate(s).
· 2 colors, 1 dilution, & 4 patterns - HealthGene - $65 for 1 locus, $20 for each additional locus
HealthGene can determine the following alleles: A, a, B, bc, bd, bs, D, d, E, e, [E/e]m, K/br, k. Done using blood (or swabs if requested). Note that A, B, b, E, and e are the only alleles normally tested for in dachshunds, so if you want any of the others tested for, you will need to specify so.
· 2 colors & 1 pattern - vetGen - $85
vetGen can determine the following alleles: B, b, E, e.
· dapple (merle) pattern - GenMARK - $95 no longer in business
This test is available through the also-nice folks at GenMARK. It accurately determines M and m, and therefore whether or not a dog is a non-dapple, a dapple, or a double dapple. (Note: It does not determine SINE tail length of the dapple mutation, just whether or not the SINE insertion is present in the allele.) This test is no longer available, but I can explain how to reliably determine dappling for a small fee (see here).

disorder traits — genetic testing
|
· chromosomal disorder karyotyping - PennGen - $?
· cord1 progressive retinal atrophy - University of Missouri CVM - $40
· cord1 progressive retinal atrophy - AHT (UK) - ≈$102 (£50)
These two essentially identical tests determines the PRA status of some dachshunds. Please note that this test does not work for all dachshunds who are known to have PRA.
· juvenile-onset neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis - University of Missouri CVM - $40
Please note that this test does cannot determine adult-onset neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, just juvenile-onset.
· mucopolysaccharidosis IIIa - PennGen - $75
· narcolepsy - OptiGen - $130
· pyruvate kinase deficiency - PennGen - $75
| |
disorder/disease traits — general testing
|
· metabolic screening - PennGen - $0
· cytology - Auburn University CVM - $25
· urinalysis - Auburn University CVM - $15
